Irish parliament passes plain tobacco packaging law

On Tuesday Ireland became the second country in the World to pass a legislation that requires cigarettes to be sold in packets that are plain despite a backlash to the law that has been brought about by tobacco companies in the country who are against the move.

Despite threats from tobacco companies, such as Imperial Tobacco Group and Japan Tobacco International who have promised to take legal action on the law which has ban the use of colorful logos on cigarette packets, the Irish government has promised that it will not back down on its plans o proceeding forward with the law.

On Tuesday, the law was approved in its final reading at the country’s upper house of parliament and now awaits the President’s signature, which is widely seen as a formality, for it to become officially a law in the country.

Under the new law, tobacco companies in the country are prohibited from sing colorful logos on the packets of their cigarettes which are to be sold in the Irish market from May next year. In addition to that, tobacco companies will be banned from selling cigarettes which are branded in the Irish market starting May, 2017, a government spokesman said on Wednesday.

According to Imperial Tobacco, a British Tobacco firm in the U.K, which was responding to calls made by Britain’s health department last year, said that introduction of such a law would infringe international law and in addition to that it threatens the future of foreign direct investment in Britain.
