Organic Foods and Immune System

Our immune system is like the body’s defense system that protects it from the damaging effects of bacteria, viruses and other disease causing organisms and thus, prevents the onset of various diseases. Energy intake, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants are believed to have a great impact on the immune activity.

Organic foods as compared to non-organic foods are packed with higher amounts of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that boosts the immune system and keeps diseases at bay. A study published in the journal Plos One concluded that tomato fruits from organic farming had higher concentrations of vitamin C and lycopene. Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that reduces the oxidative stress and protects the body against various diseases. Lycopene is a carotenoid that traps the damaging free radicals and stimulates the immune system.

Also organic foods are free from dangerous pesticides and chemicals. These pesticides have a negative effect on the immune system and are associated with the development of certain diseases such as cancer, skin infections and contribute to the process of early or premature aging. As organic foods are pesticide-free they have no harmful effects on the immune system.
Another study published in the journal of science of food and agriculture showed that consumption of organic carrots increased the ‘T cells’. T cells have a positive impact on the immune system. A decrease in T cell count is associated with poor and weak immune system and such a person is more prone to infections and diseases.
